Why this order matters
If your store converts at 1% and you double ad spend, you double your losses on the same broken funnel. If you lift conversion from 1% to 2% first, every dollar of existing and future spend works twice as hard. Conversion work compounds; traffic buying does not.
The nine fixes
1. Cut app bloat
Every Shopify app injects scripts. Audit your installed apps and remove anything not directly contributing to revenue. Stores commonly carry six or more apps they no longer use, each adding weight to every page load.
2. Compress and correctly size images
Product photography uploaded straight from a camera can be several megabytes per image. Serve WebP, size images to their display dimensions, and lazy-load anything below the fold.
3. Put the value proposition above the fold
A first-time visitor should understand what you sell, who it's for, and why it's different without scrolling. A full-bleed lifestyle image with no text fails this test.
4. Rewrite product pages to answer objections
Most product descriptions list features. Buyers have questions: will this fit, how long does it last, what if it's wrong, when will it arrive, has anyone like me bought it. Structure the page in that order.
5. Show shipping cost and delivery time early
Unexpected shipping cost at checkout is consistently the single largest driver of cart abandonment. Put the threshold for free shipping in the header and the estimated delivery window on the product page.
6. Enable express checkout
Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay remove the entire form-filling step on mobile. On mobile-heavy stores this is frequently the highest-impact single change available.
7. Add reviews to the product page, not a separate tab
Reviews buried behind a tab are invisible. Surface the star rating near the title and the review content inline below the description.
8. Reduce checkout fields
Turn off any optional field you don't operationally need. Company name, second address line and phone number are frequently required for no reason.
9. Make returns policy obvious and generous-sounding
A clearly stated returns policy reduces purchase risk. Hiding it in the footer increases hesitation for exactly the first-time buyers your ads are paying to acquire.
Measure before and after
Change one thing at a time where volume allows, and give each change a full purchase cycle before judging it. On lower-traffic stores, batch related fixes together and compare month over month rather than chasing statistical significance you'll never reach.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?
The median Shopify store converts between 1.4% and 2.0%. Stores above 3% are performing well. Below 1% usually indicates a specific fixable problem rather than a traffic quality issue.
Does site speed affect Shopify conversion rate?
Significantly. Mobile conversion rates drop measurably with each additional second of load time. Apps, large hero images and multiple tracking scripts are the usual causes on Shopify.
Should I fix my store or increase ad spend first?
Fix the store first. Increasing spend on a store that converts poorly multiplies the waste rather than the revenue.
